Sugars play a significant role in the modern Western diet, often contributing more calories than necessary without offering essential nutrients. Added sugars—those not naturally present in whole foods like fruits and dairy—are commonly found in processed foods, soft drinks, desserts, and even savory items like sauces and bread. On average, people in Western countries consume around 17 teaspoons of added sugar per day—more than double the recommended limit for adults.

One major concern is the hidden nature of added sugars. They appear under many names on ingredient labels, such as high-fructose corn syrup, sucrose, dextrose, and maltose, making it challenging for consumers to track their intake. Children and adolescents are particularly vulnerable, often consuming sugary snacks and drinks throughout the day.

Efforts to reduce sugar consumption include public health campaigns, revised nutritional labeling, and the implementation of sugar taxes on sweetened beverages in some countries. These initiatives aim to reduce the health burden caused by excess sugar intake. Adopting a diet rich in whole foods—vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, and whole grains—while minimizing processed, sugary items is a key step toward better health in Western populations. Awareness and education remain central to this effort.

A good server guides diners through the menu, answers questions, and helps create a sense of comfort and anticipation.

When the food arrives, it often does so with a sense of ceremony. Plates are carefully placed, sometimes described briefly, highlighting key ingredients or preparation methods. 

Ultimately, being served in a restaurant combines hospitality with culinary skill. It allows diners to relax, focus on the company they are with, and enjoy food prepared by others. When done well, it transforms eating into a pleasurable and even memorable occasion.

Paying the bill

Do the restaurants you go to add a service charge or do you leave a tip?

While tips are appreciated no matter where you travel, tipping in Europe isn’t as automatic nor as generous as it is in the US, and in many countries, tips aren’t expected at all.

Restaurant tips are more modest in Europe than in America. Servers are paid a living wage, and tips are considered a small bonus — to reward great service or for simplicity in rounding the total bill to a convenient number. In many countries, 5 percent is adequate and 10 percent is considered a nice tip.

While the point of offering a tip is supposed to be as thanks for good service, the results show that many Americans will leave a tip if they receive “poor” or even “terrible” service at a restaurant.
