Notes
Yoga in India is far more than a physical exercise; it is a deeply rooted spiritual and philosophical tradition that has evolved over thousands of years. Originating in ancient Indian texts such as the Vedas and the Upanishads, yoga was developed as a path to achieve harmony between the body, mind, and spirit. The word “yoga” itself comes from the Sanskrit term meaning “union,” symbolizing the connection between individual consciousness and universal consciousness.
In India, yoga is practiced in many forms, ranging from physically demanding styles like Ashtanga and Vinyasa to more meditative approaches such as Raja Yoga and Bhakti Yoga. It often includes not only postures (asanas), but also breathing techniques (pranayama), meditation, and ethical principles for living a balanced life.
Yoga remains an important part of daily life for many Indians and is also a source of national pride. The celebration of International Yoga Day on June 21 highlights its global influence and India’s role in sharing this ancient practice with the world. Today, yoga continues to attract millions of practitioners worldwide, blending tradition with modern wellness practices.
